What are Essential Oils?

Young Living Essential OilEssential oils, known as nature’s living energy, are the natural, aromatic volatile liquids found in shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. The distinctive components in essential oils defend plants against insects, environmental conditions, and disease. They are also vital for a plant to grow, live, evolve, and adapt to its surroundings. Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plant sources via steam distillation, and are highly concentrated and far more potent than dry herbs.

While essential oils often have a pleasant aroma, their chemical makeup is complex and their benefits vast—which makes them much more than something that simply smells good.

Historically, essential oils have played a prominent role in everyday life. With more than 200 references to aromatics, incense, and ointments throughout the Bible, essential oils are said to be used for anointing and healing the sick. Today, essential oils are used for aromatherapymassage therapyemotional health, personal carenutritional supplementshousehold solutions, and much more.

What makes an essential oil therapeutic-grade?

It’s a combination of many factors from plant cultivation to processing to continuous research and improvement. Young Living Essential Oils has the greatest respect for every step of the process.

Unlike other essential oil manufacturers that add solvents, thinners and artificial fragrances to their oils, Young Living essential oils are completely pure. All the herbs, flowers and plants used in Young Living essential oils are harvested from hand-picked varieties grown naturally in the perfect soil and climate. The plants are harvested at their peak, and immediately placed in state-of-the-art distillers where they are gently distilled at low heat for just the right amount of time.

Unlike essential oils that simply smell good, Young Living is committed to providing therapeutic-grade essential oils that are 100% pure and contain the highest constituents.

Young Living’s standards ensure that their essential oils and oil-enhanced nutritional supplements represent the most effective wellness products available.

With farmland that now exceeds 4,500 acres and the discovery of twenty-eight unidentified aromatic plants with essential oil composition that is beyond exquisite, Young Living looks forward to developing a whole new line of signature oils.

Why are Young Living oils more expensive than what is sold at the health food store?

Producing pure essential oils is costly. Consider that it often requires several hundred or even thousands of pounds of raw plant material to produce a single pound of essential oil.

For example, it takes three tons of melissa to produce one pound of essential oil. Its extremely low yield explains why melissa essential oil sells for $9,000 to $15,000 a kilo.

In the case of rose essential oil, it takes 5,000 pounds of rose petals to produce one pound of rose oil. When you understand how much plant material it takes to produce an essential oil, it is easy to understand why these oils are so costly.

Bear in mind that the vast majority of essential oils are produced for the perfume industry. This industry is only interested in the oil’s aromatic qualities, not it’s therapeutic qualities. Using high pressure with high temperatures and adding chemical solvents in the distillation process to produce greater quantities of oil at a faster rate is the common practice of the perfume industry.

Many people can’t tell the difference in the scent of an essential oil produced this way, but these oils lack true therapeutic properties and will not produce results. Many of the important chemical constituents necessary to produce therapeutic results are either flashed off with the high heat or do not have enough time to be released from the plant material. Added artificial fragrances boost what was lost in the harsh distillation process or didn’t have time to develop.

These practices are not acceptable for Young Living’s essential oils. Gary Young pioneered a specialized process that uses extremely low pressure and low temperature to yield the most potent essential oils on the market today.

Once plants have been harvested and distilled, Young Living puts the resulting essential oils through strict quality assurance tests. Samples are sent to independent and in-house labs where they endure a battery of tests, ensuring that when you crack open the seal of a Young Living essential oil, you are receiving the highest standard in purity, potency and preparation.
